Encoder is a device that compiles and converts signals (such as bit streams) or data into signal forms that can be used for communication, transmission and storage. The encoder converts angular or linear displacements into electrical signals. The former is called code disc, and the latter is called yardstick.

Encoders can be divided into contact type and non-contact type according to readout mode, and incremental type and absolute type according to working principle. Incremental encoder converts displacement into periodic electric signal, and then converts this signal into counting pulse. The displacement is expressed by the number of pulses. Each position of the absolute encoder corresponds to a definite digital code, so its indication is only related to the starting and ending position of the measurement, but not to the intermediate process of the measurement.

I. What is the encoder?
Encoder is a device that converts the change of mechanical angular physical quantity into electrical signal; in the classification of sensors, it belongs to angular displacement sensor.
According to this characteristic of the encoder, the encoder is mainly used to measure the angular displacement, angular velocity and angular acceleration of the rotating object. These physical quantities are transformed into electrical signals by the encoder and output to the control system or instrument. The control system or instrument controls the driving device according to these quantities.

II. The Role of Encoders
Encoder plays a very important role in a wide range of coders, which produce electrical signals and are processed by CNC, PLC and control system. These sensors are mainly used in the following areas: machine tools, material processing, motor feedback system and measurement and control equipment. The following examples are given:

1. The NC machine tool automatically detects the workpiece by the encoder. The zero calibration of the tool holder of the NC machine tool is also implemented by the encoder.

2. Application of encoder in PLC: Generally, there are high-speed signal input ports in PLC. Encoder can be used as high-speed signal input components, which makes PLC implement closed-loop control more quickly and accurately. On the converter, it is usually connected to the PG card of the converter.

3. The encoder is used in the elevator to measure the elevator's lifting speed and position.
